Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is one of the newest cosmetic procedures. This procedure is a non-surgical procedure that is done in one or more sessions to create the appearance of hair in a shaved or non-shaved scalp. The procedure does not require local anesthetics and is generally without significant pain. We have started standardizing SMP in US Hair Restoration in the last six month to have a perfect way of doing it for a variety of scalps and hairs.
Wematch the pigment to the person’s natural hair color. This will be the hair color that is seen if the person shaves their head. The procedure is done using the SMP machine which introduces the pigments to the very superficial layers of dermis (skin). We use fine needles with a variety of angles depending on the final desired appearance. The depth, angle, number of needles and speed of the machine all affect the end result and should be carefully selected for the optimal outcome.
If the patient routinely shaves his head, it is recommended to have it shaved a day before in preparation for the procedure.
The benefits of this procedure are:
- Pain is minimal during the procedure
- None to minimal recovery time is needed
- More cost effective than a some other surgical options
- More durable and less messy than topical products such as microfibers
The only disadvantage of this procedure is that it is not permanent. SMP may require touch ups every few years to keep it at the original shape. The time between needed touch up will vary with each case.
The purpose of this procedure is to help improve the appearance of balding or thinning areas. Some patients choose to have this procedure done to minimize the visibility of scars of scalp or any other hair bearing areas. The scarring of scalp could be the result of either from past hair transplant or any type of scarring alopecia. It is recommended to schedule a consultation with the specialist who performs this in order to be evaluated and assess the scalp and balding pattern. Some people may not be a good candidates for this procedure depends on the quality of hair and scalp and also their personal styling preferences. That will be determined during the consultation session.

Innovation in FUE Hair Restoration
Shaving the entire scalp is used in the vast majority of hair transplant surgeries. The innovation of the Celebrity FUE Hair Transplant (not just for celebrities) procedure is growing in popularity at Los Angeles US Hair Restorations centers. This is because the scalp is not shaved.
When transplanting a small number of follicular units by the individual removal of the grafts shaving of the scalp is not mandatory. The demands on the surgeons and medical technicians are arduous but the benefits to the patients are worthwhile.
Unshaved scalp means:
- Your procedure is virtually undetectable
- No major change in current hair styling
The Celebrity (non shaved) FUE Transplant is a development of utilizing follicular unit hair transplant procedure in multiple non invasive procedures to restore hair to balding scalp. As in most FUE procedures when indicated a FOX test is conducted to assure that a patient is not vulnerable to high level of transaction (damaged grafts). Patients with overly curly hair particularly may not suit well to the individual extraction of follicular units (FU). A FOX test is the best way to determine that FUE hair restoration is the best choice for a patient.
Celebrity FUE transplant procedures provides:
- A gradual improvement to patients pattern baldness
- Allows patient to enjoy an uninterrupted schedule
US Hair Restorations Los Angeles hair transplant centers are under the direction of Parsa Mohebi, MD. Dr. Mohebi also serves as the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons chairman of the FUE committee. He notes that FUE procedures can be applied in unique situations for some patients to meet the demands of their very busy lifestyles.

Significant advancements in the field of hair restoration surgeries; centered on the introduction of micro and mini grafts has revolutionized the industry. Use of these types of grafts allows for creating natural hairlines.
What are mini and micro grafts?
Mini grafts are actually very small organs of the body called follicular units (FU). An FU can consist of one, two, three or four hairs. After harvesting these micro grafts they can be place at any point of the recipient’s scalp. This method of hair transplantation has brought into focus aesthetically superior surgical hair restoration results. These advancements have increased the treatment options for men and women suffering from baldness. New hair transplant techniques give natural, permanent and proven results when FU or micro grafts are utilized in reconstructive and restoration procedures.
These extremely small little organs (FU), have low metabolic needs and thus are able to better survive the transplantation process as compared with older plug grafts which are easily damaged (transected). These new methods are very helpful in scar revision reconstruction surgeries. Micro grafts have been able to grow fast and successfully even on scalp that has been burnt.
Today’s micro-grafting techniques or better said follicular unit transplantation procedures provide hair loss patients with the results they desire.

Psychological Considerations
There are many things that can adversely affect a person’s self image and consequently their self esteem. Medical science recognizes with certainty that these two factors directly impact our quality of life. Hair loss affects millions of people men and women. Amongst this group of people there is a number of individuals who undergo male pattern baldness at a very early age. The emotional impact on these individuals can be even more devastating.. Today we have more insight to the negative consequences of hair loss and that fact it can be prevented in many cases.
Study on Hair Loss Psychological Affects
“Psychology of hair restoration surgery” is a study that was presented in 15th annual scientific meeting of Internal Society of Hair Restoration Surgery in 2007. In this study we sent questionnaires to 200 men who had only one hair transplant in past and we asked them about the psycho-social aspects of their lives following their procedures. We have compared the responses from the patients with higher classes of hair loss with early stages. We also compared the changes that younger patients experienced in comparison to the older ones. We have found a significant improvement in future outlook in younger patients who received a hair restoration as opposed to the older ones. I am attaching the graph right off the presentation I had back in 2007 that compares the impacts of a hair restoration on younger patients vs. older ones.
Advanced Evaluation
Hair transplant surgeons used to have a strict criteria in past as of strictly not perform a hair transplant on anyone younger than 24. However, today there are more treatment options, as well as, more documentation on the long term effects of hair restoration medications. Hair restoration doctors did not want to do a hair transplant until they can clearly see the pattern of baldness. Modern miniaturization study with microscopic evaluation allows for more accurate predictability along with other evaluating factors. This gives us a reasonably reliable way to predict the activity of hair loss in different areas with some certainty. We can predict the final pattern of male patterned baldness (MPB) utilizing the patient’s miniaturization study in addition to a thorough evaluation of his family hair loss history.
Ethics of Hair Transplant at a young age
I recognize as many people have mentioned that there has been unethical practices in some instances. As medical doctors we must hold to the highest of ethical standards and best practices. Performing a hair transplant when the miniaturization study and the psychological profile does indicate would be a breach of these standards. I appreciate the feedback in this forum and plan to write an article on the indications and specifications of “Early Intervention for Hair Transplant Surgery” soon.

Modern technology has allowed our society with proven, natural permanent hair loss options.
Modern technology has allowed our society with options not possible a half century ago. Medical and scientific advancement presents promising changes with each advancing generation. An example is the loss of vision typical with age like hair loss. People with vision problems, had the disadvantage of wearing glasses; although there are contact lenses as well. There is still a dependence upon outside tools to reduce the loss of vision; which inconvenient and sometimes greatly reducing the quality of life. Now the near miraculous advancements in LASIK vision correction has made vision correction possible. No longer are middle agers at tables in restaurants pulling out their glasses or squinting helplessly to read the menu; the stubborn problem of fading eyesight for millions of people is solved.
If someone chooses to undergo a LASIK procedure, does it make him an insecure person? Not in the least! Rather, they are using their resources to correct a medical problem and look their best.
Hair Restoration Is Nothing to Be Embarrassed About
Our Los Angeles based US Hair Restoration clinics consistently receive calls and emails from people who need hair restoration for their baldness, but they are shy to provide their names as they inquire to be able to get more information about hair restoration options.; It is amazing how many want to hide the fact they contacted us for advice. We are proud of our fine medical staff and patient advocates who are exceptionally sensitive to the needs of those seeking our help. It is one of the deeply rewarding aspects of our profession that we can provide encouragement to our patients, as well as, give them new hope, confidence, and a fresh perception of how their suffering from hair loss can be alleviated.
Hair loss is a disease, a common one and like many other diseases there are treatments for it.
So, we are proud to say: “Today, most people no longer have to endure being bald”
Modern Medical and Technological Advancements for Hair Loss
Modern medical and technological advancements provide similar relief for hair loss sufferers as Lasik for people with vision loss. One day we hope the stigma of addressing hair loss through medical treatment lessens its impact on people who suffer from baldness as it has for those with vision impairment.
At our Southern California centers our team uses the latest technologies and procedures to perform FUT and FUE hair restoration surgeries. These procedures provide our patients with a permanent natural treatment for their hair loss. The progress in hair transplant surgery now provides our patients with results that are proven, natural and permanent.

Hair Transplant Gigosessions: A Patient Benefit
Gigosessions and all hair transplant surgeries are optimally aided by the use of the Laxometer, invented by Parsa Mohebi, MD medical director at US Hair Restoration centers. Laxometer is an intra-operative tool that is becoming an industry standard globally. Utilizing the metric system for most accurately determining scalp laxity, Laxometer helps the surgeon to reduce the risk of closure tension on donor wound edges. The result leads to minimize the tension of the donor wound edges and increases the safety of the strip follicular unit hair transplantation. The Laxometer’s preciseness in measurements allows hair restoration surgeons to best formulate the safe size of donor strips. Donor strip size ultimately determines the number of possible grafts available for hair transplantation.
These exciting developments for hair loss sufferers have made hair restoration a natural, permanent and proven solution.

Last season saw the launch of a series of webinars meant to educate those interested in the science and art of hair restoration, as well as personally connect with Dr. Mohebi. Since the demands of everyday life make personal connections limited, Dr. Mohebi felt a webinar would be a great place to connect and answer any questions that patients may have which are difficult to find accurate answers to.
The previous webinar tackled three common subjects which we are constantly being asked about. “Hair Loss Psychology” was the first to be discussed and Dr. Mohebi explained the strain many feel as a result of their appearance not being as youthful as it once was. This reality is hard to accept for many and Dr. Mohebi explained the different options available.
The second topic discussed was “Hair Transplant: How Does It Work”. This segment explained the different facets of a hair transplant procedure and what is to be expected before, during, and after the surgery.
The final topic was entitled “The Latest Technology In Hair Transplantation” where updated information in the world of hair restoration was discussed. New products such as the laxometer, and current surgical methods were discussed.
The upcoming webinar is on Tuesday April 10th at 6PM, Dr. Mohebi will discuss 3 popular hair restoration topics. There will be a time for Q & A as well as incentives given for joining. If you would like to be a part of US Hair Restorations next webinar send an email to webinar@ushairrestoration.com.
